Short Story:
The Jaintia Hills, the easternmost
district of Meghalaya, which comprises an area of 398 square
kilometers, lies between Latitudes 25' and 26'N and Longitude 92'51'E.
During the British raij, the Jaintia Hills was only a subdivision of
the United Khasi and Jaintia Hills District created after the
annexation of the Jaintia Kingdom and the merger of its hill portion
with Khasi Hills. The southern part of the Jaintia Hills, known as the
War-Jaintia region, receives heavy rainfall of 200-500 cms. per year
and the relative humidity is usually above 80 per cent. The people of
the narrow southern belt are called 'WAR' and their speech form is
also known as War or Amwi which is a dialect variety of standard Khasi
language.
Amlarem Development Block is located
in the South of Jaintia Hills District. The Block was bounded by the
Thadlaskein Block in the North, The Khliehriat Block in the East, The
Mawkynrew Block and Pynursla Block in the West and Bangladesh in the
South.
